Some audio files not playing on iMac but all play in iPhone.

I've been working on the site http://www.tauntonfamilychurch.org and have just spotted that some of the talks refuse to play on the iMac. All of them can be downloaded on the iMac and all can be played on iPhone.

I have no idea where to start with troubleshooting this.

Any help gratefully received.

Owen

I don't have a Mac, so I can't test it.  Your sermons play for me with Firefox on Windows 7.

What media player are you using?  I don't recognize it.

If the media player isn't working on a Mac, then perhaps it is a bad media player.  I recommend using the default media player that is built-in to WordPress, as it works well on just about any device.  You can find the settings needed to use the WordPress media player in the Troubleshooting FAQ here on the forum.  Let me know if you need more information.

Hi, I have exactly the same issue since I upgraded to the latest wordpress/sermonbrowser etc.

Audio files work fine on PC - all brokers

Audio files work fine on Chrome on mac, and on Safari on iPad/iPhone - but not Safari on mac

I am using the default media player within wordpress - mediaelementsjs

Incidentally - when I go to the media elements website, the audio file on their site plays just fine.

Does anyone use any other media players with success?

Would appreciate any help!

ElohimChurch,

You aren't actually using the default WordPress built-in media player.  Instead, you are using the MediaElement.js WordPress plugin.  They look very similar (they are both based on MediaElement.js), but they do have different code, and if you switch to the built-in player, it might work better on a Mac.  (I don't have a Mac to test, so I don't know for sure if this will fix your problem or not.)

To use the built-in media player, you need to do two things.  First, you need to deactivate the MediaElement.js plugin.  Second, you need to go to Sermons, Options, and change your MP3 Shortcode setting to this:

(left-square-bracket)audio mp3="%SERMONURL%"(right-square-bracket)

Note: Use square bracket characters [ ] in place of the text in bold above.  Square brackets were omitted here in the forum to avoid trouble.

If you have any more questions about this, let me know.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I have deactivated the media elements.js plugin, bizarrely my short code setting was as you've said, but its still not working.

Apologies if this is a stupid question, but do I need to activate the built in player?

ElohimChurch,

You are now using the built-in media player; you don't need to do anything else to activate it.

Unfortunately, I don't have a Mac to test, so I won't be able to help you get it working.  Perhaps someone else on the forum will be able to help.

Otherwise, here is something else you can try.  Temporarily switch to one of the default WordPress themes (TwentyEleven, TwentyTwelve, TwentyThirteen, etc.)  After you switch, check to see if your media player works on the Mac.  If it does, then you know that there is some code in your theme that is causing problems.

Let us know what you find out.

Hi, the plot thickens...

1) I tried twenty twelve - same problem.

2) I uploaded a media file using the "add media" option - and that played perfectly, but nothing in the sermon browser files.

3) I changed the short code to be this square bracket mejsaudio mp3="%SERMONURL%"square bracket  and the files played perfectly on mac and iPad  - but not on a PC...   This showed in the sermon browser page on wordpress.

Error: You have specified a custom MP3 shortcode, but Wordpress doesn’t know how to interpret it. Make sure the shortcode is correct, and that the appropriate plugin is activated.

So I've put the short code back for now so that the majority of people can use it, but I am completely confused as to why when I uploaded an MP3 using the add media function - it played perfectly!!!

I know that us mac users are the minority, but both our senior pastors have macs, so I need it to work - and it did until I upgraded.... AGHGHGH!

Further update, I just installed haiku minimalist audio player to see if that makes a difference, and EXACTLY the same problem. Plays on iPad, PC - but not mac...

Does anyone have any other audio players that they use as I am at my whits end!

Does anyone have any ideas on this one? I'm also having problems with the RSS feed for podcast downloads too. I would really appreciate some help as at the moment, only PC users can access our files. All the senior leaders at our church have macs and iOS devices... I am not popular currently!

ElohimChurch,

I went to look at your Sermons page again, but it looks like you've removed Sermon Browser.  Obviously, I can't help you troubleshoot if it isn't running, but if you want to try it again, reply here and let me know. You could create a new page that contains the "sermons" shortcode so that we can work on it without everyone getting the errors.  I would suggest that you switch to the MP3 shortcode setting that worked with Mac, but not in Windows, then let me look at it and we'll see if we can get that working.

Right, I've got it back - but its currently under http://www.elohimchurch.com/podcast

I've changed the short code to be square bracket mejsaudio mp3="%SERMONURL%"square bracket  and the file plays fine on my mac. I've got the following error showing in wordpress.

Error: You have specified a custom MP3 shortcode, but Wordpress doesn’t know how to interpret it. Make sure the shortcode is correct, and that the appropriate plugin is activated.

I understand now.

The "mejsaudio" MP3 shortcode is only valid when you are running the MediaElement.js plugin.  You are not running this plugin, so the shortcode is invalid.  That is why Sermon Browser is showing you the error message.  When Sermon Browser sees that you don't have a valid MP3 shortcode, it just posts a simple link to the MP3 file with a generic icon.  You should see this on your page right now.  Screenshot

In most modern browsers, if you click on a link to an MP3 file, it will start playing with whatever player is built into the browser.  This will look and act differently in every browser, but this is why it plays on the Mac.

Here is what I'd like you to do.  First, let's switch back to the correct MP3 shortcode setting:

(left-square-bracket)audio mp3="%SERMONURL%"(right-square-bracket)

Next, I'd like you to edit your Podcast page.  Below the "sermons" shortcode you have on there, add the following new shortcode:

http://pastebin.com/F0JyBCrC

(Click on the link to see the shortcode.)

After you've done that, you should have a new player at the bottom of your Podcast page.  Let me know if that player works on your Mac or not.

Ok, done that but sadly no sound on mac/safari. On mac/Chrome  the new player doesn't play either, whereas the others do.

I think I misspoke before.  It looks like you are running the MediaElement.js plugin.  I'd like you to deactivate it, then post back here and I'll look again.

I'd now like you to edit your Podcast page again.  Keep the shortcodes that you already have on there, but below them, add another one:

http://pastebin.com/h50YM43p

This one is slightly different than the last one.  Then let me know if the new one plays on the Mac or not.

I only see one extra player on the bottom of the page.  Do you have two shortcodes on your Podcast page after the "sermons" shortcode, or just one?  Which one do you have on there?

Please put both extra shortcodes that I asked for above.  Then let me know which ones work on Mac, and which ones don't.
