Unlinked Files won't delete uploaded .docx and .mp3s

I hope someone can help me before I rip all my hair out…

I love love love Sermon Browser. This last fall uploaded docs and mp3 files started appearing and then multiplying in the 'Unlinked Files' section. I removed Sermon Browser, reinstalled, uploaded a 3 months worth of sermons, and things were working fine for about 4 weeks.

Now it's doing it again. Basically, when I upload an mp3 or a docx file, the display looks totally normal. Clicking on the player or uploaded document however produces nothing- it says the link is broken. Trying to delete the uploaded file in the Files section only creates more problems- the file reproduces itself. I have like over 100 unlinked files now.

I checked that I was uploading all my files into the correct folder- and the import options all confirm this. My php.ini file is just fine- set to the limits. Other sermons play just fine.

I'm stuck. Help!

Sincerely,
Andy

I've seen this problem a few times in the forum:
http://www.4-14.org.uk/forum/s…..-bug#p2594
http://www.4-14.org.uk/forum/s…..them#p1811

In both cases, I believe the cause is special characters in the filename. I recommend these rules when naming files for use with sermon browser:

  • Only use letters, numbers, dashes — and underscores _ in the name.
  • Don't use any spaces or any other punctuation or special characters in the filename.
  • There should only be one dot . in the filename, right before the extension. Do not put more than one dot in the filename.
  • The extension should be all lowercase. example.mp3 is good, example.MP3 is bad.

Examples of good filenames:
example.mp3
2011-02-14.mp3
Best_Sermon_Ever.mp3
sermon_notes.doc

Examples of bad filenames:
example.MP3
February 14, 2011.mp3
Best.Sermon.Ever.mp3
Notes from Pastor's sermon.doc

I believe that naming files using the rules above will prevent this problem in the Unlinked Files screen from happening again.

So the first step for you is to FTP into your webserver and delete the offending file and/or rename it to conform to the rules I listed.

If this stops the file from appearing on the Unlinked Files screen, great. If not, I think some database hacking will be required. Let me know if the file appears "stuck" on the Unlinked Files screen and you need more help.
