Unlinked Files are not being noticed by Sermon Browser

I have been uploading my files via http://FTP.  Once they were uploaded, they immediately showed up in my Sermon Browser "Files" tab under the "Unlinked Files" category.  From there, I would simply create a new sermon.  I've been doing it this way for quite some time, and it worked just last week.

Now, Sermon Browser isn't recognizing my unlinked files at all, and I know the files are uploaded because I can play them through QuickTime by typing in the URL.  I've checked with my host, and there is no issue on their end.

Is anybody having the same problem?

Does anybody have any idea what is going on?

I was having the problem using an older version of WP.  After I realized the problem, I upgraded to the newest WP, but it didn't fix the issue.  I have deactivated every plugin individually to see if they were somehow causing an interference, but none of the deactivations fixed the issue.  I could simply delete the Sermon Browser plugin and reinstall it, but I'm assuming that I'll lose the nearly 200 sermon files I've created.  Of course, I could cut and paste them into a document and reload them in the newly installed plugin, but that would be tedious and a last resort.

jbensimpson;

I have not experienced this problem yet (thank goodness as I have had my fair share of others). Have you tried to ftp back into the sermons folder, delete out one of the unlinked sermons in question, and then reupload said sermon. Just a thought.

I know I had a different file issue that was similar to another user having file issues. Come to find out, mine was due to having  an apostrophe in the title name and the file not being properly parsed by the plug-in (go figure). I even tried to trick it with the \ before the '. So file names and characters may come into play. I hope this helps and that you get your issues resolved soon :o)

Grace & peace…

Shawn,

Thanks for talking about this.  I've FTP'ed in and delete and re-uploaded the unlinked files several times, but it hasn't worked.

As for the file name issue, I name all my files in the following format:  2012-02-05_FileName.mp3.  I never use spaces or punctuation marks except for the dashes in the date and the period before the application.  I do uppercase the first letter of each word in my file name.  Do you see any problem with the format?

Thanks for your help!

jbensimpson;

Do you know if you use your own php.ini file or do you use a system wide php.ini file that your hosting provider makes every one use the same. Also, once the files have been uploaded have you checked to see what the file permissions are. FTP can be a little quarky at times and do strange things to files. Do you know how the files are being transmitted (active or passive, etc) What FTP program are you using? We may find the answer for you in one of these areas. Please reply when you are able.

Blessings :o)

I'm not sure about php.ini file.  How could I find out?

The permissions on the file say: "User = 6" and has "read" and "write" checked and "execute" unchecked; "Group = 4" and has "read" and "write" and "execute" unchecked; "Others = 4" and has "read" and "write" and "execute" unchecked also.

The file are being transmitted with an active status.

I'm using FTP Explorer 10.5.19, which I bought and love.

What do you think?

644 Should get you there, mine are at 644 and seem to be working fine. For testing purposes, you can try to change one file to 655 and see what you get. What happens if you try to and transmit one file for testing using passive ftp.

I also use Filezilla which is Open Source and free and have NEVER had any problems for many sites I have used it on.

I'll check back with you in a bit. I have to go on a service call…

I wasn't very clear on the permissions.  Let me try again.

User has read and write checked.  Execute is unchecked

Group and Others has read checked.  Write and execute are unchecked.

I understood about the permissions and mine are set the same way. Can you see in your ftp program on where the setting is to send a file in passive mode send with with a filename of today's date so you can track it and know which one we are working with. Also, who is your hosting provider? I can see if I can find anything in their knowledgebase (if they might have one) and try to gleen some info that way as well.

Shawn,

I switched permission to 655, but it didn't make a difference.

I've also installed Filezilla.  How do a I do a passive upload in that program?  I did upload a file using that program earlier, most likely in active mode, and it still is not showing up in my unlinked files category of Sermon Browser.

My host is 1and1.com.

If you set up your site through site manager in Filezilla, go back into site manager by clicking and file and then site manager. On the right side there is a tab that says transfer, change it from default to passive and see if the file uploads properly.

Also, which audio player plugin are you using? Also, what is your web URL please?

Blessings…

I'm using Audio Player 2.0.4.1.

I'm going to try to change to passive.

My website is westmainbaptist.com.  All of my old files are playing fine.  However, I did unlink one of my old audio files that had been working for over two years, and as soon as I unlinked it, it would not show up in the unlinked files.

I switched FileZilla into passive mode and uploaded a file named 2012-02-07.mp3.  It's not showing up at all in my unlinked files in Sermon Browser.  However, I can play it in Quicktime by going to http://westmainbaptist.com/wp-…..-07.mp3.

Not saying this is the culprit, but according to one on one, here is there current php.ini files settings which are quite different from the plugin developers recommendations.

Here is what one on one says:

http://faq.1and1.com/archive/46.html

Pay specific attention to the part that says - The php.ini file should be placed in all the directories that has PHP scripts you
want effected by that php.ini file.

For example, on my hosting provider, there is a way on my cpanel to copy their global php.ini file to my public_html folder. That way any changes I make to that file affect my site only, if if they make changes to theirs. Many programs like WP Joomla, Drupal, etc. need to have a dedicated php.ini file for program stability purposes.

http://faq.1and1.com/scripting…..php/8.html

You will want to make those changes regardless.

Blessings…

This was to be a part of the last post as well, but the stupid forum would not let me post more than two links at one time. DOH!!!

Here is what the developer recommends:

Under the Sermon menu on the right side and the the options section, what is your path set to in the upload folder? That last link you said plays through quicktime by going to http://westmainbaptist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012-02-07.mp3.%C2%A0. In your link I am not sure where the %C2%A0 is coming from either. I do not believe you can properly use the uploads folder and that is why the plugin developer said to make a folder called sermons below it (again see the configuration page)

http://wordpress.org/extend/pl…..tallation/

If you use the uploads folder directly it may or may not work, especially if you do an upgrade of the plugin sometime if the developer releases an upgrade. If you do make this change, you will also have to fix the link on the main page that holds the shortcode or they will all be broken.

BTW, AWESOME layout. Do it yourself, or is it a themed template?

Again, on the right hand side of the WP menu, go under settings, audio player. Click on the advanced tab.

Are the last two check boxes checked or unchecked? I read somewhere that the encoding box was supposed to be unchecked for the audio player plugin (sorry, don't have a link where I read that right now) but what happens if you change them (one at a time, then save and test) until you have gone through all possible combinations? I have my encoding on (knock on wood all of it is currently working). Other than these things I have suggested so far, I am becoming more puzzled. If the others are working yet new ones do not, strange.

Shawn

Thanks again so much for taking time on this.  I got my theme from http://www.rockettheme.com/.  They are awesome!  Thank you for the encourage on the layout.

I called my host's tech support, and they instructed me how to upload a php.ini file to the root directory with the recommended Sermon Browser settings.  They simply had copy and paste these settings into a notepad document, name it php.ini, and upload it into the root directory.

I also changed my upload folder to /wp-content/uploads/sermons/ and transferred all of my mp3's there.  The old linked mp3's are working fine, but the unlinked ones are still not showing up.

I messed with the audio player stuff, but it didn't fix my problem.

Do you think I should delete the plugin and reinstall it?

Before we get that drastic, do you see a sermon that should have a file linked to it, but the file is one of the unlinked ones? (hopefully that makes sense). If so, under that sermon, go back to the bottom of the add sermon page and leave the box as the default and choose file, does the unlinked file show up as an option?

I know that unlinked files means that they have not yet been assigned to a sermon (or maybe they were and something happened to the database) but I know I have a lot of unlinked files, but that is because I have not yet assigned them to a sermon and a preacher and saved.

You may not need to revert back to it, but IF you do chose to remove and re-install the plugin, be sure to ALWAYS do a full site AND full database backup. I have not ever had a uninstall and reinstall go south on me, and I don't want to start now with you :o)
