Hiding Filter doesn't work

Good evening!

I have a problem with hiding / minimizing the drop-down filter. Even though I enabled the setting in the SB settings AND used the shortcode .

Hiding / minimizing only works with the OneClick filter for me. How to get the drop-down filter hiding to work?

I appreciate your help!

Sam

Sam, are you trying to remove the filter completely? or display only specific filters for your sermons?

No, I'm not trying to remove the filter completely. I would like to have a button or link which says "Show Filter". By clicking on the button the DropDown filter is displayed.

Hello, I have a similar problem, and it seems like this thread hesn't been solved. Could someone please help.

I'm able to toggle the filter on/off on some pages, but not on other.

works here:

http://www.agape-poznan.org/  — shortcode: {sermons filterhide=hide}

http://www.agape-poznan.org/ko…..a-baranka/  — shortcode: {sermons series=8 dir=asc filterhide=hide}

doesn't work here:

http://www.agape-poznan.org/ka…..r-slomski/  — shortcode: {sermons preacher=4 filterhide=hide}

(the "Show/Hide filter" text in the pages above reads: "Pokaż/Ukryj opcje wyszukiwania")

EDIT: I've just discovered that when I change the filter to one-click {sermons preacher=4 filter=oneclick filterhide=hide}, it works fine

I just discovered this post http://www.sermonbrowser.com/f…..nd-adults/

so instead of creating separate pages for the different preachers I am now able to pass the preacher parameter, but I would still want to know why it doesn't work on all of my pages.

From SEO point of view it seems to me that separate page with the name of the preacher would help in indexing the sermons by the search engines. I'm not a SEO expert though. Ben, why do you suggest in the other post the option with the parameters over the option with separate pages for the service types? Any particular reason?

Thanks

szymon,

I've got the show/hide filters working on my test site, using shortcodes.  I'm not sure why it isn't working on your site.  I'll try to do a little more testing and see if I can replicate the problem.

There are a few reasons why I prefer one Sermon Browser page, as opposed to multiple Sermon Browser pages.  The first reason is that in my experience, Sermon Browser has a few bugs when you try to have multiple Sermon Browser pages.  I'll give you an example from your website.  You've got all the sermons from one of your pastors here:

http://www.agape-poznan.org/ka…..r-slomski/

If you go to that page and click on the "Next page" link, you'll see that you are taken to the next page of the main Sermon Browser page with all the sermons, not the next page for that particular pastor's sermons.

What some people do is eliminate the main Sermon Browser page, and just create specific sermon pages for each service, or pastor (or whatever they want to use to organize their site.)  However, this makes the problem worse, because Sermon Browser was really designed to have a main page that all the links can go to.  So Sermon Browser just picks one of these pages to be the main page, and all the links from each page will go back to that main page.  See this topic for some discussion:

http://www.sermonbrowser.com/f…..t-service/

In that topic, the church had set up separate pages with separate shortcodes for their two different language services: Mandarin and Cantonese.  Sermon Browser had picked Mandarin for the main page, so all the links on the Cantonese page were pointing back to the Mandarin page.  I came up with a fix for that church that seems to be working, so this might be a solution for you if you prefer to use the separate pages with shortcodes.  But even with this hacking, Sermon Browser works best with one page, in my opinion.

I'm not an SEO expert.  My number one focus when working on a website is that it is functional for the human users.  I would hope that creating a functional, well organized website would be recognized as such by a search engine, but I wouldn't want to "break" my site in an attempt to make it look better for a search engine.  Having said that, I would think that one Sermon page would be best for SEO.  Why?  Because that creates a canonical address for each sermon page.  Here is an example of what I mean.

Let's say you've got two different Sermon pages: One for Sunday Morning, and one for Sunday Evening.  These are done with separate shortcodes on different pages.  Here are the addresses:

/sunday-morning/

/sunday-evening/

Your most recent Sunday Morning sermon is here:

/sunday-morning/?sermon_id=10

However, due to the way Sermon Browser works, you could also get your most recent Sunday Morning sermon here:

/sunday-evening/?sermon_id=10

The same sermon would be available at two different addresses.  That is a negative for SEO.  That is why Sermon Browser wants to pick a "main" page, so that it uses a consistent link for each sermon.

Here is a second example.  You have one page for all your sermons, here:

/sermons/

If you want to send people to a view that only shows them the Sunday Morning services, you send them here:

/sermons/?service=1

No matter which way you get to the sermons, the only place to find your most recent sermon will be here:

/sermons/?sermon_id=10

I hope that explains things.  Let me know if you have more questions.

When I select show filter I get two lines of links.  Series and dates.  I want the drop down select option to show.  Please advise how to get it to show.

larryntx,

In the WordPress Control panel, under Sermons, Options, you'll see an option called "Filter type."  Choose "Drop-down."  Click on the Save button, and then reload your page to see if you get the drop-down style filter.

If you need more help, please post a link to your site, so I can take a look.

Thanks, is there a way to default so the "Drop-down" filter always shows without clicking on show filer?

Yes.  On the options screen, uncheck the box that says "Minimize filter."

Ben,

thank you very much for your very thorough reply to my questions. I appreciate your time taken to explain your point of view regarding different ways of setting up Sermon Browser. It was very insightful. Based on your suggestions, I redesigned our site and have all sermons pointing to one page, instead of having separate pages for different preachers.
