Is it possible (editing the theme's php code or preferably otherwise) to get the sermon filter form into a sidebar widget?

Have you tried looking in your widgets for the "Sermons" sidebar widget? Drag it over to your sidebar and tell it how many sermons to display, whether or not you want the preacher name, etc.

I'm not looking for the sermons to go in the sidebar, but rather the filtering form which would then structure the query for the loop on the main part of the page.

I think your making it more complicated than it has to be.

An 'easier' approach would be to take your page.php template, copy that template file and rename it to something like sermon.php. Once you have done that, go into wp and click 'edit' on the page where you placed the sermon shortcode. Change the template file to the new sermon.php file you just created.

Now you have sermon browser using it's 'own' template page file.

At this point you could edit the sermon.php page you created and remove the sidebar call from the template.

Now you have a completely blank slate to work with. It's simply a matter of changing of the template code within sermon browser itself to make the page look any way you want.

for instance, you could float your own div to make your own sidebar, which you place the call to the filtering form in. Simply place the filtering forms shortcode into your new 'sidebar div'.

Really, at that point you can order the shortcode display anyway you want.

I'm not interested in removing my sidebar as it already has other things that are required on the page. To recreate it all would be a nightmare. So…

Has anyone found a way to truly show the filters in the sidebar as a widget? I already know how to make a widget only show on the sermon page, I just need the widget now.

If it helps, I also already have a php widget, so if I just had the correct php, I could put it there. Any thoughts?

I have also wanted to know if anyone has successfully done this as well, besides trying to reposition the div using CSS.

I use a widget called, "Advanced Text Widget". It places a second box in the sidebar, and you can do anything you want there – including HTML. I just use mine for text and hyperlinks. Just for the heck of it, I placed the tag there, and lo and behold, there was Sermon Browser, right in the sidebar widget. Problem was, it was the width of the page. So it can work – I am not a programmer so it would take me days to figure it out.
